Kathy Kim

Kathy Kim is an undergraduate student majoring in electrical engineering at Arizona State University, beginning her studies in fall 2024. She was born in South Korea, where she lived until the age of eight before moving to Scottsdale, Arizona.

She initially pursued computer science but discovered a passion for circuitry during an EPICS course in her second semester, prompting her to switch majors. With a long-term goal of working in myoelectric prosthetics, Kathy felt that biomedical engineering was too specialized and debated between mechanical and electrical engineering—ultimately choosing the latter for its broader career pathways.

Beyond her coursework, Kathy is involved in the Neural Control of Movement Lab as an undergraduate research assistant, where she assists with study preparation, data collection and data analysis. This role has deepened her interest in signals and systems, specifically electromyography (EMG) and further fueled her enthusiasm for myoelectric prosthetics.

Kathy’s interests also extend to the performing arts. She is minoring in music performance with a focus on cello and plays drums in a band with friends. In addition, she co-founded and leads Hooked Hearts—a crochet organization that donates all hand-crafted items to those in need—serving as co-president and event coordinator. Outside of school and music, she loves to spend time with family and friends.

Kathy’s advice for students:

“Earning a degree in electrical engineering requires a significant commitment of both time and effort. However, it is important to find ways to enjoy the learning process rather than dreading it. Take advantage of the many resources ASU offers, including tutoring services and office hours, to support your academic success. Lastly, remember to step away from your studies occasionally and embrace the broader college experience—balance is key to maintaining both motivation and well-being.”
