Online Academic Success Advisor

Christine (she/her) is an academic success advisor for Arizona State University’s BSE in electrical engineering program, primarily supporting the online campus. She was raised in Arizona, and she is a first-generation college student and an alumna of ASU’s Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions.

Christine is passionate about removing barriers for people to reach their goals. She believes in working smarter, not harder and has seven years of experience in higher education, where she has worked in multiple roles.

Christine is also active in her Girl Scout Service Unit, helping with both the Outdoor Education Team and the all-girl FIRST® Robotics team. Christine also enjoys playing board games and role-playing games and spending time in nature. The easiest way to get her talking is to ask about her pets.

Gia was born in New York, raised in Southern California and has resided in Arizona since 2004. She holds a bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership and business and a master’s degree in higher education with an emphasis on adult learners.

Gia worked as an account manager in corporate travel management for 14 years before beginning work in education, her lifelong passion, in 2006. She enjoys working in higher education because it allows her to use her many years of corporate experience in tandem with educational theory to support the students she advises, many of whom are non-traditional.

Gia lives in Tempe with her proud Sun Devil alum husband Tim, and in their free time they enjoy global travel, live music, outdoor activities and exploring all that Arizona has to offer.  

“Lifelong education is a passion of mine,” Gia says. “Many of my students are returning to college as adults. Supporting non-traditional students is inspiring and proves it is never too late to learn something new!”

Robert Monahan earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from DePaul University in 2000 and a master’s degree in counseling and student personnel from Minnesota State University in 2002. Robert believes that being a college student can be one of the richest and most exciting times in life. He works to help students connect to that excitement. When he’s not working, Robert enjoys spends time with his family and enjoys hiking and biking in the desert.

Associate Director, Research Operations​

Joelina Peck is the associate director of research advancement​ for the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering. Joelina’s primary responsibility is to assist faculty and researchers in the development, preparation and submission of sponsored project proposals to various federal and non-federal agencies and provide analytical and financial oversight of sponsored awards. She serves as a consultant to management on policies, plans and objectives. Joelina interacts with senior internal and external personnel on significant technical matters. She represents the organization when providing solutions to difficult and technical issues associated with sponsored projects. She interacts with faculty and staff across the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering to provide support and effective management of sponsored projects.

Joelina received her Certified Research Administrator credentials in 2009 from the Research Administrators Certification Council. She has been in the research administration field for more than 13 years. Joelina joined ASU in 1999 and left for a brief period in 2010 to manage the sponsored research office for a nonprofit medical research institute in California. She returned to ASU in 2014.

Academic Success Advisor, Sr.

Tom Quinn joined the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering advising team after seven years in higher education, most of which was spent as a financial aid advisor. He originally studied English education and served as a classroom teacher for two years before making the switch to serve post-secondary students.

Outside of work, Tom participates in community service with the Valley Alano Club in Tempe and Friends for Life Animal Rescue in Gilbert. He is an avid reader and active in the online Goodreads community, where he does an annual reading challenge and shares book reviews. The fastest way to get him talking is to ask what book he has been reading lately.

Elizabeth Sowell joined the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering advising team in 2012. She has worked at the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering in student services and advising since 2007, and she has advised both undergraduate and graduate students. Elizabeth earned her master’s degree in religious studies from Claremont Graduate University. She enjoys helping students reach their educational goals at ASU.

Jim VanderPloeg advises and counsels School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering graduate students with last names beginning with A through H regarding academics.

He was born and raised in Michigan and loved experiencing the fall season there. In 2012, Jim and his wife decided to move to Arizona to be part of the ASU community.  Before joining the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering team in June 2022, he was a social worker for the state of Arizona for six years.

In Jim’s free time, he enjoys spending time with his family and watching baseball, hockey and college football.

Allison Walls was raised in Tempe and holds a master’s degree in counseling from ASU. She worked in community mental health for two years before returning to ASU as an undergraduate academic advisor in the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering. In her free time, Allison enjoys cooking, volunteering and spending time outdoors.
