Quantum computing: When the right direction is random

Christian Arenz wants to harness the yet untapped powers of quantum computing, an emerging field that sits at the intersection of computer science, physics and engineering.

The assistant professor of electrical engineering in the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering, part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University, is working to develop new algorithms to enable advanced quantum computing capabilities in collaboration with Sophia Economou, the T. Marshall Hahn professor of physics at Virginia Tech.

Economou is the senior principal co-investigator on an $800,000 National Science Foundation grant funding the researchers’ work on the advanced algorithms. The project, called ExpandQISE, also includes the development of a textbook and training programs for teachers to introduce quantum science topics to students through more beginner-friendly instruction.

Gia McLaughlin
Manager, Academic Services

Gia was born in New York, raised in Southern California and has resided in Arizona since 2004. She holds a bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership and business and a master’s degree in higher education with an emphasis on adult learners.

Gia worked as an account manager in corporate travel management for 14 years before beginning work in education, her lifelong passion, in 2006. She enjoys working in higher education because it allows her to use her many years of corporate experience in tandem with educational theory to support the students she advises, many of whom are non-traditional.

Gia lives in Tempe with her proud Sun Devil alum husband Tim, and in their free time they enjoy global travel, live music, outdoor activities and exploring all that Arizona has to offer.

“Lifelong education is a passion of mine,” Gia says. “Many of my students are returning to college as adults. Supporting non-traditional students is inspiring and proves it is never too late to learn something new!”
